GFCN Weekly Update - October 4, 2102

 

   Combined Service Announced!               Sunday, October 21, 2012 will be a combined service with both congregations worshiping together.  The service will begin at 10:00 AM and will be bilingual, in both English and Spanish, with Dr. Freddy Guerrero, rector of the South American Nazarene Seminary in Quito, Ecuador, speaking.  English speaking small groups that normally meet at 11:00 AM will not be meeting.  We are anticipating a great day of worship and praise to our Lord Jesus Christ!

Dr. Jim Zimbelman - THURSDAY,  NOVEMBER 8, 7:00 PM

WHO: Dr. Jim Zimbelman is a planetary geologist at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum where he has served as the chairman of the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies. He has expertise in physics and mathematics (B.A.), geophysics and space physics (M.S. University of California at Los Angeles), as well as geology (Ph.D. Arizona State University). Jim was co-editor of the book Environmental Effects on Volcanic Eruptions: From Deep Oceans to Deep Space,” and has written more than 60 papers and maps for various peer-reviewed scientific journals and books. Over the past 20 years at NASM, he has been involved in the analysis of high-resolution spacecraft imaging and geophysical data of the Earth and terrestrial planets, geologic mapping of Mars and Venus, and other geologic studies of terrestrial planets.

WHEN & WHERE: Thursday - November 8 @ 7 PM at Greenville First Church of the Nazarene
WHAT: Presenting - “A Spacecraft Tour of the Solar System”
    Dr Zimbelman will review the highlights of the science we have learned during the last 50 years     as robotic spacecraft have been sent to targets throughout the solar system, including the rounded river gravels that the Curiosity rover just found on Mars (announced recently) with slides to accompany his lecture.   The aim is for this lecture to be about 40 minutes long, followed by     answering any questions people might have.

ALL CHURCH WORK DAY ANNOUNCED.  Saturday, October 6, 2012 is our fall clean up and work day for the church.  Saturday AM beginning at 8:00 AM to 12:00 NOON.  We are inviting all who would like to help around the church with the facilities to come and join us.  We will have supplies available, but we are requesting that you bring your own tools.  We will be working inside and outside the building.  For more information see Larry Sams or Pastor Ray Moore they are making a concentrated effort to organize and announce the "job list" in advance of the work day so that the skills and interests of volunteers can be matched with the tasks that are to be accomplished.

KAIROS Prision Ministry

On October 11^h through October 14^th Bill Kaib, along with other Kairos volunteers, will be going into Perry Correctional to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Twenty four inmates volunteered to sign up for this interactive presentation of just how much God loves them despite the harm to society and themselves that they have done. To date, almost one half of the population of Perry have gone through a Kairos program either at Perry or other correctional institutions across the State of South Carolina.

In addition to the twenty four inmates who signed up for the program, the goal of Kairos is to give each inmate in the facility (approximately 900), a bag of dozen cookies for three nights with a Bible verse in each bag. The cookies are distributed by Kairos volunteers who go into the cell blocks and hand each man a bag of cookies and say, “God bless you”. In addition, the volunteers and the inmates going through the program also consume a goodly amount of cookies. If you can help in this regard, it would be much appreciated as I’m responsible to provide 150 dozen. Homemade cookies are preferred, but any cookies are gladly accepted. Cookies must be at the church by 9:00 AM on Thursday October 11^th. Package the cookies in such away to avoid breakage as much as possible.  All cookies are repackaged at the institution for distribution.

The Kairos program needs your prayers to be successful. Four “Prayer Wheels”, large pie shaped white boards, one for each day of the event, are hung up in a location for all to see. Each board is divided into 48 segments, each segment representing one half hour over a 24 hour period. The names of all who have agreed to set aside one half hour, starting Thursday October 11^th at 4:00 PM, concluding Sunday October 14^th at 3:00 PM, are written on the boards. Wednesday, October 31, 2012 everyone is invited to TRUNK & TREAT 2012.  Bring your car (decorate it if you choose), lots of candy, dress in costume (if you choose- no monsters or demons), park in the front parking lot and share a time of fellowship, picture taking, good treats - this is for the kid in all of us!

Come make a memory and share in a night of fellowship.  Wednesday, October 31, 6PM - 8PM.  This will be our Wednesday night activity for the night.

Journey to Bethlehem - December 1 - December 2, 2012 - mark your calendar now and plan to be a part of this special outreach!

Congratulations to Jerry Witty

The 2011-2012 Joanne Woodward Award Winner for Best Supporting Actor In A Musical at the Greenville Little Theater.  

Jerry Witty was awarded this prestigious award at the Greenville Little Theater on Friday, September 14, 2012.

Our congratulations to Jerry on this special award.  He received the award of Best Supporting Actor in a Musical from the Greenville Little Theater for playing the part of Mayor Shinn in "The Music Man".  Also if you see the advertising for the Greenville Little Theater for the 2012-2013 season Jerry is featured on the cover. The LINKS program of the Church of the Nazarene is a network of personal connections between missionaries and Nazarenes around the world. Missionaries are assigned to districts and, then on the district level, connected to local churches. This gives each church an opportunity to become personally acquainted with the missionary family and their field of service. Typically, churches send cards, cash gifts, packages, and other remembrances to their LINKS missionaries.  LINKS stand for Loving Interested Nazarenes Knowing Sharing.
 
In return, the churches feel a sense of involvement with the global mission enterprise of the church through regular correspondence from the missionaries, updates from their field, and even through deputation services while the missionaries are on home assignment. The missionaries are encouraged, knowing people care and pray for them. The relationships built over time personalize names and faces that both the missionaries and their LINKS churches value highly.

GFCN Update - September 12, 2012

Praying for Pastor Kyle Poole and Pastor Sammy Geddings both pastors on the South Carolina District.  Join us in praying for these men of God.

 Work continues on the downspout drainage lines around the Sunday school building and the daycare building.  Hopefully this will solve some the humidity and water problems that we have been experiencing in both locations.

REVIVAL - Continues last night of services tonight at 7:00 PM

Plan now to be a part of each of these services. A special time for children KIDS KRUSADE (Revival) will also take place simultaneously with the revival services. Thank you to all who have been involved and to Dr. Benson for his timely and challenging messages.

REVIVAL - STARTS THIS SUNDAY!

September 9-12, 2012 with Evangelist Dr. Michael Benson, Chaplain at Olivet Nazarene University in Kankakee, Illinois.  Services will take place at 9:30 AM on Sunday and at 6:00 PM on Sunday; 7:00 PM Monday - Wednesday. Plan now to be a part of each of these services. A special time for children KIDS KRUSADE (Revival) will also take place simultaneously with the revival services. Prayer for Revival - The sanctuary will be open all day each Tuesday, and a special prayer meeting will take place at 5:30 pm each Tuesday evening.

Dr. Freddy Guerrero, rector of the Nazarene Seminary of South America in Quito, Ecuador as he spoke God's Word to us on Sunday, September 2, 2012.  "It was a great privilege for us to host Dr. Guerrero and hear God's Word shared in such a powerful way." said Pastor Chuck Fountain and a "special thanks to Andy Angrino who translated."

2012 Student Beach Retreat

With 23 students and 8 adults, this was our chance to set the pace for this school year. There were so many wonderful moments throughout the weekend where we bonded and sought out what it means to be Christian. Pastor Wes said, "We were challenged to duplicate Christ's humility in dying to ourselves so that we can freely and joyfully live for Him."

Our rising 7th graders had their first chance to be a part of our group and really fit in perfectly. God was moving in and through all of our students as the teens, no matter age or background, were learning to work as one body. We are excited about seeing these wonderful students living out Christ's call to follow Him this upcoming year.

Pastor Wes, expressed it this way, "Thank you to everyone who helped make this weekend a reality and a special thanks to those who prayerfully supported us and will continually do so. Your love and prayers are a vital support to this ministry!"

Pastors Ken and Mary Paynter are doing a great job with this church plant and using incredible insight to minister to students in the Central, South Carolina area.  The video, above,  is a great tool for understanding and praying for the ministry.

SPECIAL GUEST THIS SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 2, 2012

Freddy Guerrero, Rector Seminario Teológico Nazareno Sudamericano, Quito, Equador, (pictured on the right) will be our special guest and speak for us during the AM worship service.  We will hear how God is working on the South American continent and how God is using the Seminary in Quito, Ecuador to prepare men and women for the work of ministry.  Come praying that God will meet with us in a very special way.

Beach Retreat 2012

Students Beach Retreat - Myrtle Beach, SC
The students and their sponsors will be enjoying a beach retreat this weekend, August 31 - September 3,  with Pastor Wes Steisslinger speaking from the book of Philippians. This will be the "official" kick-off of their year and they will spend quality time be ministered to and in ministering to others.  Pastor Wes says, "We are anticipating an exciting weekend!"

The trip is from 6:00 pm Friday August 31st- Monday Sept. 3 (arriving from 4-6pm). Meet at the church around 5:30pm so we can pack up and leave by 6:00pm. Bring snacks to share (meals are provided by us but snacks are not). Bring money for a meal on the way home as well as any spending money for the weekend. Wear appropriate bathing suits. Bring your Bible and a note pad. Bring your own sheets/towels.

This Sunday- August 26, 2012

 Our scriptural focus will be Ephesians 6:10-20 - Holiness Summit - Be prepared.  It is promotion Sunday for our Sunday School and children will be moving to their new classes for the upcoming year.  It is also BAPTISM SUNDAY and we have several who will be baptized during the AM service.  We invite you to be a part of this very special day.  Coming praying that God's presence will be with us and flow over us.

ALL CHURCH WORK DAYS ANNOUNCED.  Saturday, September 29, 2012 and Saturday, October 6, 2012 are our fall clean up and work days for the church.  Saturday AM beginning at 8:00 AM to 12:00 NOON.  We are inviting all who would like to help around the church with the facilities to come and join us.  We will have supplies available, but we are requesting that you bring your own tools.  We will be working inside and outside the building.  For more information see Larry Sams or Pastor Ray they are making a concentrated effort to organize and announce the "job list" in advance of the work day so that the skills and interests of volunteers can be matched with tasks that are needed to be accomplished.

GFCN Update for June 13, 2012

Sunday is Father's Day and we will focus on the importance of the men we call "DAD".  We will review "The Resolution" from the movie "Courageous" and invite men who are willing to step forward and make the resolution their own for the future.  It is a commitment to families and the church to be a man "after God's own heart."

"The Resolution" is downloadable by click here.  We will be challenged to live up to the commitments made and be the man that God has called us to be.  2 Timothy 2:2 tells us the kind of man we are to be, "² And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others."  Paul challenged Timothy to be a learner, a teacher, a disciple and an example.  And God challenges, requires, us to be the same.  On Sunday we will also enjoy a sacred concert by "the" Michael Jackson and a free-will love offering will be received for his ministry.  

Youth Pastor Interview

This weekend, Friday, June 15 through Monday, June 18, we will host Wesley and Sarah Steisslinger.  They are interviewing for the Youth Ministry position.  They will be a part of the service on Sunday AM, will share with teens and leaders in the Sunday School time, will meet with the church board and other interested individuals at 5:00 PM on Sunday in the Bridge Cafe.  Please prayerfully assist us in the process of finding God's person for the next steps in ministry.   

NYI (Nazarene Youth International) Convention

Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at the Campground in Batesburg, South Carolina will be the annual South Carolina District NYI (Nazarene Youth International) convention for 2012.  Members of the youth leadership team are encouraged to participate.  We will leave the church at 10:00 AM promptly, to travel to Batesburg.  Please confirm your attendance with our NYI President, Rachel Hazel so that we can assure everyone has a ride for the day.  The PM service will conclude about 9 PM and we will be back at the church shortly after 11:00 PM.  

  All Church 4th July Picnic

Hot dogs, chips, baked beans, rattlesnake beans and snow cones to eat.  Horseshoes, Corn-hole, and other games to play.  Bring your friends and enjoy an evening of good food, fellowship and fun.  Beginning at 5:00 PM on July 4th at The Bridge Student Center.
